not the rank.

Search ranked ten blue links. A generative engine returns one answer and names a few sources. Generative engine optimization is the work of being one of them.

01 · Where the term came from

A research paper named it before the industry did.

Generative engine optimization is the practice of shaping your content so that AI answer engines cite it. Not rank it. Cite it. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews a question, the engine writes one answer and names a handful of sources. GEO is the work of being named.

The term is not agency invention. A team at Princeton led by Pranjal Aggarwal coined it in a paper first posted in November 2023 and later presented at the ACM SIGKDD conference. They built a benchmark of about 10,000 queries across nine datasets, tested nine different content changes, and measured how each one moved a page's presence inside generated answers. The headline result: targeted optimization raised visibility by up to 40 percent.

02 · The shift

A rank is a position. A citation is a sentence with your name in it.

Classic search gave you a list. Ten results, ranked, and your job was to climb it. The user scanned, clicked, and decided. That is the world traditional SEO was built for, and it still runs underneath everything here.

A generative engine collapses the list. It reads across many pages, decides what the answer is, writes it in its own words, and cites the few sources it leaned on. The user often never reaches a results page at all. So the target moves. SEO was a first party game about your own page and its rank. GEO is a third party game about whether the engine trusts you enough to repeat you.

This is the same discipline behind our work on AI search visibility. Different engines choose sources differently, which is why the how each one chooses questions matter, from ChatGPT to Perplexity to Google. GEO is the umbrella over all of it.

03 · What earns a citation

Five content changes the research actually measured.

Cite sources

Attribute your claims to credible outside references. In the Princeton study this was the single strongest signal, and for pages sitting low in the traditional ranking it lifted their presence in answers the most.

Add statistics

Replace a vague claim with a specific figure. Numbers carry information a model cannot paraphrase away, so they get pulled into the answer with the source attached.

Add quotations

A direct quote from a named person reads as evidence. Generative engines lift quotations into answers and keep the attribution, which puts your name in the sentence.

Write with authority

Clear, confident, expert phrasing gets cited. Hedged mush does not. The engine is choosing which passage to trust, and trust reads in the prose.

Stay fluent and structured

Clean writing the model can parse and lift without mangling. Readability is retrievability. A passage that is easy to quote is a passage that gets quoted.

Notice what is not on the list. No keyword density, no link schemes, no thin pages built to game a crawler. The engine is reading for the passage it can trust and quote. The paper found that for pages sitting low in the traditional ranking, near the fifth position, adding citations raised their presence in answers by as much as 115 percent. The weakest page, done right, could overtake the strong one.

04 · Not a replacement

GEO sits on top of SEO. It does not replace it.

An engine can only cite what it can retrieve. Before a model writes a word, something has to crawl your page, read it, and hold it as a candidate. That plumbing is classic technical SEO. A page that is slow, blocked, or buried in client side rendering is invisible to the answer for the same reason it was invisible to the old index.

So the base layer does not go away. Crawlable pages, clean structure, real authority. What changes is the target on top of it. You are no longer only trying to rank a page. You are trying to write the passage a model will lift into its answer and put your name beside. The two jobs share a foundation and diverge at the finish line.

05 · How an answer gets built

Watch the engine pick, and you see where GEO lives.

Ask a generative engine for the best tool for a job. It does not run one search. It breaks the question into parts, retrieves candidate passages for each part, ranks them for how well they answer that piece, and then writes a single answer from the strongest few. At the end it lists the sources it actually used, not everything it read.

Every one of those steps is a place to win or lose. If your page never gets retrieved, you are out before the answer starts. If it gets retrieved but reads as vague, another source gets quoted. If it gets quoted but the engine cannot cleanly pull a sentence, your name falls off. GEO is the work of surviving each step with the attribution intact.

06 · How you measure it

Not a rank number. A share of the answer.

The old scoreboard was a position. GEO needs a different one. The Princeton work measured visibility two ways. One counts how much of your content appears in the answer, weighted by where it sits, since a citation near the top carries more than one buried at the end. The other asks how prominent a reader judges your source to be inside the response. Presence and prominence, not a slot on a page.

There is a catch the trackers keep flagging. AI citations are far less stable than organic rankings. Reports through 2026 put the share of cited sources that change from one month to the next between 40 and 60 percent across Google's AI mode and ChatGPT. A citation you won in March can quietly vanish by May. That makes GEO a rate to hold, not a ranking to bank.

07 · Who should care

Anyone whose buyer asks a machine first.

The urgency tracks a single question. Does your buyer ask an AI before they visit a site. For a category where people research by asking, software they are comparing, a service they are vetting, a decision they want explained, the answer engine now sits between you and the customer, and being uncited there is the new version of being on page two.

For a business that lives on local walk in traffic, GEO is not the priority yet. For a brand that gets discovered through research, it already is. The honest read is that most companies land somewhere in the middle and are being described by models right now, accurately or not, whether or not they have written a word toward it.

The answer gets written whether you shape it or not. Generative engine optimization is simply the decision to have a say in what it repeats about you. Start with one page and one question your buyer actually asks. Make it the source worth quoting.
